Commentary: Here there are three clauses. First, completely knowing the three categories to bear sentient beings: through wisdom one can liberate sentient beings, knowing that only dharmas can transform and liberate them, hence it is called 'bearing'. Second, with vigor subduing the māras: 'māras' refers to the four māras; these four are armies. Or, the armies are ten, as Nāgārjuna says: 'Desire is your first army, sorrow is the second, hunger and thirst the third army, craving is the fourth, sleepiness the fifth army, fear is the sixth, doubt and regret the seventh army, anger is the eighth, gain and empty fame the ninth, arrogance and contempt for others the tenth. Armies such as these oppress and drown the renunciant. With the power of dhyāna and wisdom I break your armies, attain the Buddha path, and liberate all people.' Third, abandoning arrogance and seeking the wisdom of the path of skillful transformation: in order to protect the true Dharma, not being self-exalted, skillfully seeking the wisdom that benefits others, and being able to protect and uphold the Buddha's true Dharma. The old version says: 'constantly seeking the wisdom of thoughtless real mark'; non-deliberative, anāsrava correct wisdom is called 'thoughtless', not that it lacks mental thought.
