Commentary: Below is the third section, explaining the two in contrast through mutual pairings. There are sixteen pairs; the old sūtra had four pairs. Here there are two pairs. Cultivating conditioned merit to receive superior rebirths; not abiding in the unconditioned, cultivating the provisions of wisdom, pulling sentient beings out of suffering, and seeking great bodhi—hence 'not exhausting the conditioned'. If one abides in the unconditioned and exhausts the conditioned, one becomes the two vehicles, forever entering cessation. Benefiting oneself and not others is the meaning of the passage below. One should know that if one does not abide in the unconditioned and does not exhaust the conditioned, unlike the two vehicles who forever enter cessation, one is able to accomplish the two benefits. Giving joy without lack is not abiding in the unconditioned; great compassion benefiting beings is not exhausting the conditioned.
