Commentary: Below, answering personally to manifest the factual event. There are three parts: first, the Buddha points out and declares; second, Śāriputra praises; third, Vimalakīrti’s question and answer. This is the first. The eastern world is named Abhirati (‘Wonderful Joy’), because upon seeing its various adornments, joy arises. The Buddha’s name is Akṣobhya, translated here as ‘Immovable’. Unshaken by the eight winds, unassailed by the four māras, constantly tranquil and unchanging; hence he is called ‘Immovable’. To save sentient beings, he was born here from there.
