Commentary: (2) Moving the flights of stairways. Śākyamuni's precious stairways were caused to be made by the King of the Devas. Akṣobhya's precious stairways welled forth from the earth. Śākyamuni soared into empty space and went to Trāyastriṃśa to sit for the three-month summer retreat in order to repay his mother's kindness. At the end of the summer when he was about to return, the King of the Devas dispatched mighty spirits to make precious stairways for the Buddha: the central path of yellow gold, the left path of agate, and the right path of crystal; hence they are called the three flights. In that land, the precious stairways are for causing humans and devas to come and go in a conditioned manner, and thus they well forth from the earth; this also is not contradictory. Devas descend to the human realm to behold the Buddha and hear the Dharma; humans ascend to the celestial abodes to view the palaces, cities, and gardens of the King of the Devas; therefore precious stairways are needed. Because the Buddha activities of the ten directions are each different. Although that is a pure land, it also manifests those Cakravāḍa mountains and so forth. Just as the Buddha of Sukhāvatī also has royal cities, parents, wives, and children, Māra kings, Devadatta, and various others.
