Commentary: Below, it is supreme by comparative evaluation. There are three parts: first, setting up the question through comparative evaluation; next, the Lord of the Gods gives the answer; finally, the Tathāgata reiterates and confirms. In the comparative evaluation there are three parts: first, comparative evaluation during the present; next, comparative evaluation after the parinirvāṇa; finally, directly posing the question. In this first part there are three: first, a simile for the number of Buddhas; next, devotion over a period of time; finally, the offerings of the four requisites. The people of the western regions mostly plant sugarcane, bamboo, reeds, hemp, and rice; as for mountain forests, their wood is stiff, straight, and strong enough to bear loads, and what grows on mountains is mostly dense. Just as deep in the mountains a forest of trees naturally forms, so it is taken as a simile. The Tathāgatas' fulfillment of the fruit is dense and full in the same way. Passing through kalpas or more: first, practicing reverence through bodily action; second, practicing respect through mental action; third, practicing praise through verbal action; fourth, practicing service through the three karmas without any deficiency or violation. There are three kinds of implements of offering: first, food and drink; second, bedding; third, medicine. The dwelling is singular, namely, rooms and houses. Because these superior and sublime offerings of the four requisites can produce requisites of comfort, they are called 'comfortable implements of offering and dwellings'.
