Commentary: Four: Bhaiṣajyarāja instructing. This has two parts: first, clarifying the Dharma offering based on doctrine, mostly practiced prior to the bhūmis; second, clarifying the Dharma offering based on practice, mostly practiced on the ten bhūmis. The first has three parts: first, stating; next, revealing; finally, concluding. Within revealing, there are also two parts: first, clarifying the Dharma that is offered to; second, from "delights in hearing this scripture" down, the proper Dharma offering. Within that which is offered to, there are two parts: first, clarifying the substance of the sūtra; second, clarifying the function of the sūtra. This is the substance of the sūtra. There are two kinds of sūtras: 1. The truly profound; 2. The seemingly profound. The meaning of the principle of emptiness says: the first is the ultimate teaching of emptiness of the three non-natures, and the second is the conventional teaching of existence of the three natures. The meaning that accords with principle says: the first is the teaching of the three natures as neither empty nor existent, and the second is the teaching of the three non-natures that speaks only of emptiness. These two kinds of sūtras have ten meanings: 1. Mundanely difficult to believe and accept; 2. Free from being surpassed, cultivation and study reaching the ultimate; 3. Free from views; 4. Subtle, profound, and far-reaching; 5. Minute and exquisite; 6. Free from defilement; 7. Mahāyāna of definitive meaning; 8. Not knowable through the twenty-one conceptual discriminations; 9. Included in the Bodhisattvapiṭaka, not the teaching of the two vehicles; 10. The king of sūtras that is a dhāraṇī, embracing everything. Because both teaching and principle are fully complete, it is the king of sūtras. The older version had seven.
