Commentary: This clarifies the function of the sūtra. It has thirty phrases; the older version had twenty-five phrases. Here are four phrases: 1. Sealed by the Buddha's seal: signless tathatā is called the Buddha's seal; other realizations of tathatā are not yet complete, so it is uniquely called the Buddha's seal. Because the teaching is sealed by the principle, it is called "sealed by the Buddha's seal." The older version says "dhāraṇī seal," sealed by the seal of the nature of total retention, which is also the seal of the principle of signless tathatā. 2. Able to distinguish and reveal the four irreversible wheels. 3. The six perfections arise from this. 4. Excellently embraced by what it embraces; "that which should be embraced" refers to the excellent and marvelous principles explained by the teaching, and all sentient beings benefited by the teaching. The older version says "excellently distinguishing the meaning," which is precisely these two kinds.
