Commentary: Here there are two phrases: 1. Superior four unobstructed knowledges arise from this; the older sūtra lacks this. 2. Distinguishing brief summaries of Dharma. In Sanskrit it is called uddāna, translated here as "brief summary." A Dharma-uddāna is a brief summary of teachings. The four brief summaries of Dharma are: 1. All conditioned phenomena are impermanent; 2. All contaminated phenomena are suffering; 3. All phenomena are selfless; 4. Nirvāṇa is peaceful tranquility. This is as explained in the Bodhisattvabhūmi, the Mahāprajñāpāramitā, and the Prajñāpāramitā of Suvikrāntavikrāmi-paripṛcchā. If called udāna, translated here as "collected exposition," this refers to the verses summarizing meaning in the sūtras; that is, using verse stanzas to summarize meanings and bestow them upon learners is called "collected exposition." Here, the brief summary of Dharma is solely prose, so it is different. Or it is said that the brief summary of the four meanings produces the teachings of the four brief summaries, dividing it into two.
