The Commentary says: Above, the Dharma to be offered to was explained; below, the Dharma-offering is explained. This has eight practices: 1. listening to it; 2. faith and understanding; 3. receiving and upholding; 4. reading, and 5. reciting—these two are thoroughly fluent; 6. contemplating, making the principle manifest within one's own mind, establishing and setting up its meaning, analyzing and expounding it. Once this principle is clearly evident before oneself and one has done this personally, 7. again speaking it for others; 8. skillfully and expediently preserving and protecting the True Dharma, and practicing in accordance with the teaching. These are called Dharma-offerings. There are ten Dharma gates, as explained before. The two of copying [it] and bestowing [it] upon others are both material offerings; therefore they are omitted from discussion, and only seven practices are mentioned. Faith and understanding are subsumed under contemplation; practicing this is included within offering. Although these practices are eight, their substance is only seven, while the older sūtra has only six.
