Commentary: Above, [the Bhagavān] entrusted [the Dharma] to cause it to be practiced; below, he explains the reason. There are two parts: first, explaining the loss and benefit to two kinds of persons; second, entrusting the persons and the Dharma. The first part also has two parts: first, explaining that there is loss; second, explaining that there is benefit. This is the first. Here there are two kinds of persons: First, those who, although they have not yet generated the great aspiration, have already planted superior roots of good. Second, those who have already generated the great aspiration, whose resolute faith is vast and great—that is, the stages prior to the grounds (bhūmis). Among the thirteen abidings, the various mental states prior to the grounds are termed 'the practice of resolute faith'; therefore, their resolute faith is great. If worldlings prior to the grounds do not hear this sūtra, those who have not generated the aspiration will not be able to generate it, and those who have generated it will not be able to advance and benefit; this is called falling back from superior benefit.
