Commentary: This reveals their virtue of being able to tame those difficult to transform. Just as the three Kāśyapa brothers claimed to have attained the true Path and could not be subdued by the great assembly, all these bodhisattvas are able to tame them. Once they have been subdued, they no longer cross-examine or oppose the bodhisattvas; therefore, the bodhisattvas attain fearlessness. The older translation says 'surpassing the assemblies' [蓋諸大眾], which refers to those difficult to transform who hold wrong views: because their bad reputations and wrong understandings overshadowed the assemblies, the bodhisattvas subdued them. Alternatively, it means that the bodhisattvas have achieved both wisdom and eloquence, surpassing the assemblies, and thus attain fearlessness.
