Commentary: This is the superior virtue of their fine reputation reverberating far and wide. As for the lord of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, Śakro Devānām Indraḥ: Śākya is a capable clan, deva is heaven/deity, and indra is sovereign. Being the sovereign ruler among the heavens and of the Śākya clan, he is titled Śakra. His name is Kauśika, as is fully explained in other sūtras regarding his origin. Because he venerates the Buddhadharma, bodhisattvas of other directions and devas of the higher realms mostly hear his name. 'Surpassing' means exceeding. The fame of the bodhisattvas exceeds even his, because all throughout the ten directions hear their names. However, because the translator said that Śakra resides on Mount Sumeru, the scribe simply recorded it as such; for this reason, the older sūtra said 'surpassing Sumeru.' As for Mount Sumeru, even the devas of Paranirmitavaśavartin do not know of its existence, much less the others.
