Commentary: This is the supreme and wondrous virtue of the voice expounding the Dharma. The tone and cadence of expounding the Dharma are like the voice of a kalaviṅka, supreme among the voices of all sentient beings. 'Subtle' (wei) means profound and concealed, skillfully expounding deep meanings. 'Wondrous' (miao) means excellent, graceful, elegant, and pleasing. The Buddha has five kinds of beautiful and wondrous voices: first, extremely deep like thunder; second, clear and resonant heard from afar, bringing joy to hearers; third, entering the heart with reverence and love; fourth, understood with certainty; fifth, hearers never tire of it. These bodhisattvas possess the latter four, hence it says their speech and voice are wondrous and supreme. This is precisely the mark of the Brahmā voice among the thirty-two marks, of the greatest merit, as weighed and compared in the sūtras.
