Commentary: This reveals the superior virtue that their virtue is vast, wondrous, and beyond mental deliberation. 'Stating' (cheng) refers to verbal expression. 'Measuring' (liang) refers to mental calculation. This means the holy virtues of the great bodhisattvas are broad, vast, wondrous, and difficult to comprehend: they cannot be stated in words, nor can they be measured by mental deliberation; they are beyond the reach of speech and thought prior to the seventh ground, and hence are not an object of stating and measuring. This lower phrase explains the upper phrase: because they surpass that realm, they are said to be 'immeasurable.' On the eighth ground and above, they advance further from moment to moment; the initial single moment doubles what was cultivated in the previous two eons, two moments quadruple it, and so on until the multiples exceed the past countless times, so they cannot be measured by those prior to the seventh ground. The older sūtra omitted 'stating' (cheng), so the meaning was still difficult to understand.
