Commentary: This shows the reason for the rebuke. There are two reasons: First, generating the aspiration for the lesser vehicle is like a wound or a wart, ruining and destroying one's reputation, and failing to save others from distress. Since they had no such intention, conferring the lesser vehicle on them was harming them when they had no wound. Second, their faculties were sharp and great, seeking to practice the path of the Mahāyāna; therefore, do not point out the narrow path of the lesser vehicle to make them study erroneously. The first harms others; the second misleads others. Due to these two faults, he rebuked him for not knowing their faculties.
