Commentary: From here below is the third, causing them to attain an exalted stage. As for 'non-retrogression,' it causes them to reach the non-retrogression of stage in the seventh of the ten abodes, never again falling back to become the two vehicles. In the Five Precepts Upāsaka-śīla Sūtra, Śāriputra, having cultivated the Mahāyāna path for sixty aeons, fell back to become the two vehicles because of giving away his eye. Therefore, the Lotus Sūtra speaks of transforming the śrāvakas who had fallen back from the bodhi-mind to make them reach non-retrogression; thus we know they reached the seventh abode. It was not non-retrogression of faith, because they had had faith for a long time. Nor was it the two kinds of non-retrogression of realization and practice, because they were called beginners.
