Commentary: Fourth, Vimalakīrti instructs them that within renunciation there are two kinds: 1. bodily renunciation, donning the robes and shaving the hair; 2. mental renunciation, generating the resolve and cultivating practice. Generating the resolve and cultivating practice is true renunciation; one is able to uphold the prohibitive precepts and accomplish the nature of a bhikṣu. Donning the robes and shaving the hair accomplishes the appearance of a bhikṣu. Now he exhorts renunciation, relying on true renunciation.
