The Commentary says: This reveals his own answer. Leaving home is vast and open like empty space; staying at home is cramped and confining like a prison. Therefore a sūtra says: ‘Although a peacock's colors adorn its body, it cannot fly far like the wild goose and crane; although white-robed laymen have wealth and noble power, they are not equal to the superior merit of leaving home.’ ‘Merit’ (guṇadharma) means the arising of good; ‘supreme advantage’ means the extinction of evil. ‘Merit’ is blessing; ‘supreme advantage’ is called wisdom. ‘Supreme advantage’ is able to transcend the world; ‘merit’ is the twofold adornment of blessings and wisdom.
