Separately recounting the past provisional [teachings]. The past provisional [teachings] are of two kinds: first, transforming the śrāvakas, which has already been analyzed above; second, transforming the bodhisattvas, which will be expounded below. The Buddha knew that their class could not respond, [yet] revealed their lofty virtues coming together to assist and reflect him. Now, clarifying the matter of commanding the bodhisattvas to inquire after the illness, it is therefore named the Chapter on Bodhisattvas. In this chapter there are two parts: first, clarifying that the four virtuous ones were silenced in argument and would not go; later, clarifying that the remaining kinds all stated they were not competent. However, among the four virtuous ones they are divided into two pairs: making one aspire to non-retrogression while oneself revering bodhi; failing to perceive Māra's enmity, how could one know worldly merit? Vimalakīrti refuted them according to circumstances, and each remained silent. Thus, although the four virtuous ones are different, they are distinguished as two pairs. Within each one, the text has two parts: first, the command; second, the declining words.
