What are the three kinds of consciousness? Consciousness is called perceiving and discerning, which is merely a different name for wisdom. Amalavijñāna is the ninth, unmoving consciousness; if differentiated, it is the Buddha-consciousness. Ālayavijñāna is the eighth, non-perishing consciousness; it still contains latent afflictions and is combined with avidyā; differentiated separately, it is the bodhisattva-consciousness. The Da zhidu lun says, "In the mind of a bodhisattva, it is called prajñā," which is its meaning. Ādāna is the seventh, discerning consciousness; it reviles saṃsāra and aspires to nirvāṇa; differentiated separately, it is the consciousness of the two vehicles, which in the Buddha is the wisdom of skillful means. The wave-like [consciousness] is the ordinary person's sixth consciousness, which needs no further comment. One should know that each and every one of the three kinds of consciousness is permanence, bliss, self, and purity, neither dual nor distinct from the three virtues. Since the three virtues are compared to the Suvarṇaprabhāsa, the Suvarṇaprabhāsa also serves as a metaphor for the three kinds of consciousness.
