Regarding "Buddha": Paramārtha states, "The Buddha has three meanings: omniscient knowledge differentiates him from non-Buddhists; loving-kindness and compassion differentiate him from the two vehicles; impartiality differentiates him from lesser bodhisattvas. Other people do not possess these." The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa clarifies that Buddha is the ninth epithet; "Buddha" is named "awakened," awakening to the mundane and supramundane, the permanent and impermanent, the conditioned and unconditioned, and so forth, brilliantly and greatly awakening, hence named "Buddha." The Master of Tiantai states: As for Buddha, relying on the knowledge of all phenomena there is the sixteen-foot Buddha; relying on the knowledge of the paths there is the sixteen-foot majestic Buddha; relying on all-aspect knowledge there is the Dharmakāya Buddha. The three Buddhas cannot be obtained as one or different; they are neither one nor different, yet are one and different. In contemplative interpretation: the contemplation of emptiness awakens to and knows that all dharmas are of a single mark; the contemplation of the provisional awakens to and knows that all dharmas have various marks; the contemplation of the Middle Way awakens to and knows that all dharmas have neither a mark of unity nor difference, yet also have marks of unity and difference (and so forth).
