Second, the interpretation in terms of contemplative practice. If according to the Commentary on the Wonderful Sūtra, it first matches the three characters against the five skandhas, and next contemplates the three characters as the three virtues, comprehending that the skandhas are principle itself. The present text is brief and directly uses the three characters to indicate the three virtues; although it does not speak of the skandhas, its meaning corresponds to realizing that the skandhas are themselves the three virtues. One must know that the skandhas are the retributive phenomena of [delusions of] views and thoughts; here, cultivated evil is itself inherent evil, constituting the three virtues. If their king of wholesome and unwholesome were not inherently possessed, how could it constantly abide in the secret treasury? If the mental factors and dust-like defilements were not inherent evil, how could they enter together into it?
