First, directly showing the narrative. Recounting the harboring of doubt: contemplating the profound meaning, one inevitably doubts that the Dharma realized is eternal while the lifespan of the one who realizes it is short. Recounting the cutting off of doubt: the Buddha's protection fundamentally causes doubt to be cut off and faith to arise. Recounting the 'Chapter on Repentance': this is primarily to destroy evil and secondarily to generate good. Recounting the 'Chapter on Praise': this is primarily to generate good and secondarily to destroy evil. Recounting the 'Chapter on Emptiness': this chapter guides and brings about the generation of good and destruction of evil; the present text recounts it specifically because it eradicates the three obstacles. Great Brahmā and Śakra are the lords of Saṃjñeya. The kiṃnaras and others are the retinue led by Saṃjñeya. The sūtra raises the lords to recount their chapters. Recounting the 'Correct Treatise' and 'Good Gathering': the 'Correct Treatise' governs the state, and 'Good Gathering' listens to the sūtra; these both flow forth from the secret treasury, so it recounts the two chapters by means of the secret. Recounting 'Conferring Predictions': because they heard the sūtra, their minds became pure like empty space, so they received predictions. This is why it now says 'body and mind free from defilement.' Recounting the 'Chapter on Giving Up the Body': because feeding on the Prince's body brought about liberation, demonstrating that it was not unwholesome food used to sustain life, it is now recounted with the single phrase 'right livelihood.' Recounting the 'Chapter on Praising the Buddha': although the three turns of bodhisattvas praise the Buddha with verses, these bodhisattvas are mostly ancient Buddhas, and even if practitioners of actual practice, they are future Buddhas; hence now the Buddha praises practitioners as also future Buddhas, thereby recounting that chapter. 'Fangfu' means an indistinct appearance. 'Wei' (薳), pronounced wěi, means distant, as in saying one must not exceed one's own clear bounds.
