First, clarifying that the three divisions mutually interpenetrate. "Du" means to obstruct. The three divisions together accomplish the sympathetic resonance of a single sūtra; how could their principles and meanings not mutually encompass one another? For example, the initial preface division narrates and initiates: if it were not devoid of lacking the latter two divisions, how could it be called a preface that properly penetrates? It is precisely what is initiated and narrated in the preface, and it is again what is propagated and disseminated in the transmission; otherwise, how could it be called the main exposition of a sūtra? As for the section of transmission, if it discarded the preface and main body, for the sake of what dharma would it circulate? Therefore, each of the three divisions possesses the three meanings. The terms "beginning, middle, and end" are the goodness of timing among the seven goodnesses. The Wonderful Sūtra says "good in the beginning, middle, and end"; if they were obstructed and severed, how could they be called good?
