First, he explains "subtle and wonderful." Since the Tathāgata recounted that the name Suvarṇaprabhāsa is the essence of the king of sūtras, this is the secret treasury expressed by the entire sūtra. Whoever hears it will surely contemplate this meaning, and therefore it is called "subtle and wonderful." If cause and effect were mutually lacking in these two words, they would not be the three dharmas that are permanently abiding from beginning to end; therefore, contrasting with ancient errors, he reveals the correct meaning of the present [school]. The cause encompasses the ordinary level; the fruit culminates in wonderful awakening. Because the stages are divided into six, it is profound and hard to see. Because all six are identical, it is neither vertical nor horizontal: because cause is identical to fruit, it is not vertical; because phenomena are identical to principle, it is not horizontal. The text's explanation of the principle-nature and the fruit applies by analogy: "It is also like this." If one understands the six identities, the meaning is entirely coherent.
