初、別教。行智理三次第資發，修時縱也。法報應三果中齊顯，證時橫也。良由此教本有法身為惑所覆，故須別作緣了之功相資顯發。復由此教性具三法而不相收，致使功成，三身橫顯。

First, the separate teaching. Practice, wisdom, and principle successively stimulate and develop each other; at the time of cultivation, they are vertical. The Dharma, reward, and response bodies are revealed simultaneously in the fruit; at the time of realization, they are horizontal. Truly, because in this teaching the originally existent Dharma body is covered by delusions, it must separately apply the effort of auxiliary and revealing factors to stimulate and display each other. Furthermore, because in this teaching nature possesses the three dharmas without their mutually encompassing each other, it causes the three bodies to be horizontally revealed once the effort is accomplished.
