二、「昔」下，尋因驗。三、「經」下，引經證。舊《華嚴經》也。具云「殺生之罪，能令眾生墮三惡道，後生人道得二果報：一多病、二短命。」《十地論》云「殺得三果：一異熟果，謂三惡趣；二等流果，謂生人中多病短命；三增上果，謂感外物皆少光澤，不久住故。」

Second, from "formerly..." onward, tracing the cause to examine it. Third, from "the sūtra..." onward, citing sūtras to corroborate it. This is the old Avataṃsaka Sūtra. It fully states: "The sin of taking life can cause sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies; afterward, being born in the human destiny, they obtain two retributions: first, many illnesses; second, a short lifespan." The Daśabhūmika-śāstra states: "Killing obtains three fruits: first, the fruition of maturation, namely the three evil destinies; second, the fruition of uniform outflow, namely being born among humans with many illnesses and a short lifespan; third, the sovereign fruit, namely evoking external objects that are all lacking in luster, because they do not abide long."
