First, citing the sūtra. Regarding "the great taboos of Heaven and Earth," taboo (ji) also means prohibition and precept. The five planets refer to the eastern wood essence, the Year Star (Jupiter); the southern fire essence, the Dazzling Deluder (Mars); the western metal essence, the Great White (Venus); the northern water essence, the Chronogram Star (Mercury); and the central earth essence, the Quelling Star (Saturn). The Five Sacred Peaks are Mount Tai, the Eastern Peak, belonging to Yanzhou; Mount Heng, the Southern Peak, belonging to Jingzhou; Mount Hua, the Western Peak, belonging to Yongzhou; Mount Chang, the Northern Peak, belonging to Bingzhou; and Mount Song, the Central Peak, belonging to Yuzhou. The five viscera refer to the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. Since the planets, peaks, and viscera are all correlated with the five elements, simply by matching the five elements against the precepts, the three meanings will naturally become apparent: non-killing corresponds to wood, as wood governs growth and life, while killing results in non-living; non-unchastity corresponds to fire, as fire governs illumination, while sexual misconduct is clandestine; non-drinking corresponds to earth, as earth is tranquil and stable, while drunkenness results in faltering and swaying; non-stealing corresponds to metal, as metal is used for execution, while stealing leads to punishment; non-false speech corresponds to water, as water conforms to square or round according to the vessel, thereby demonstrating non-falseness, while falsehood is the reverse of this. Correlating with the five elements already correlates with the five planets, and the peaks and the viscera merely govern the five elements. The sūtra's mention of the Five Sacred Peaks was likely the translator embellishing the text to accord with this land. As for "transgressing Heaven," etc.: above they correspond to the five planets, so violating them violates Heaven; below they match the Five Sacred Peaks, so violating them offends the Earth; centrally they constitute the five viscera, so violating them harms the body.
