Second, matching with the Five Classics. Non-killing corresponds to the Shangshu (Classic of History), because the Shangshu begins from the reigns of Yao and Shun downward, thus esteeming abdication and despising killing and conquest. The Master, seeing the royal house of Zhou weak and its commands unheeded, based himself on the Lu history to compose the Spring and Autumn Annals in order to substitute for rewards and punishments, causing treacherous ministers and rebel sons to fear; hence it corresponds to the precept of non-stealing. Propriety has five types: the duties of the Grand Master of Rites in the Rites of Zhou state: 'Employing auspicious rites to serve the ghosts, spirits, and earthly deities of the states (to serve means to sacrifice, make offerings, and feast them); employing inauspicious rites to mourn the afflictions of the states (to mourn means to relieve distress and disaster); employing guest rites to draw close the states (to draw close means to cause them to adhere in friendship); employing military rites to unify the states (to unify means to overawe those who are discordant or usurpative); employing celebratory rites to draw close the myriad people (celebratory means good; it refers to establishing regulations based on what human hearts consider good).' Sexual misconduct is intercourse without propriety, so celebratory rites are used to regulate sexual misconduct. As for the Shijing (Classic of Poetry), when there is good, it praises, and when there is evil, it satirizes; it contains no false speech. The Yijing (Classic of Changes) is a text that exhausts principle and plumbs human nature, a teaching of purity and subtle precision. How could one who is intoxicated and disordered by alcohol ever exhaust its principle or plumb its nature?
