First, according to the teachings. Since "Buddha" translates as "awakened," and there are three bodies, they are brought about by three kinds of awakening wisdom. If the wisdom of all modes brings about the sixteen-foot Buddha of the Tripiṭaka [Teaching], and relying on the wisdom of the paths there are two Buddhas, this wisdom is discussed in terms of within and beyond the realms. The wisdom of the paths within the realms brings about the sixteen-foot [Buddha of] mere emptiness of the Shared Teaching, because dull bodhisattvas emerge from emptiness into provisionality; the wisdom of the paths beyond the realms brings about the exalted [Buddha of] mere middle of the Shared and Distinct [Teachings], because the two [kinds of] bodhisattvas emerge into provisionality for the sake of the middle; the wisdom of all modes brings about the Dharma-body Buddha of the Perfect Teaching as well as the Shared and Distinct Teachings in which all dharmas tend toward the middle. Although four capacities are addressed, there are merely three Buddhas. These three Buddhas cannot be determined to be one, because non-difference is precisely difference; they cannot be determined to be distinct, because difference is precisely non-difference. One must forget oneness and difference, because this is the secret storehouse; yet one discusses oneness and difference, because of bridging stages and appropriate divisions.
