Second, from "Inauspicious" below, he briefly explains the sūtra text. As for there being separate guest stars, since the five planets and twenty-eight lunar mansions are constantly visible, they are not inauspicious stars. From "Also" below, it refers to regular stars losing their orbital paths and proper stations, which are also called inauspicious stars. There being seven in each direction: Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, and Ji are the seven mansions of the Azure Dragon of the east. Nandou, Qianniu, Wunü, Xu, Wei, Yingshi, and Bi are the seven stars of the Black Tortoise of the north. Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zui, and Shen are the seven mansions of the White Tiger of the west. Dongjing, Gui, Liu, Qixing, Zhang, Yi, and Zhen are the seven mansions of the Vermilion Bird of the south. All mansions in the four directions are counted in reverse order. "Mansion" (宿) is pronounced *xiu*. As for losing their assigned terrestrial divisions, the *Zhouguan* states: "The celestial stars all have terrestrial divisions according to provinces and states: Jiao, Kang, and Di correspond to Yanzhou; Fang and Xin to Yuzhou; Wei and Ji to Youzhou; Dou, Qianniu, and Wunü to Yangzhou; Xu and Wei to Qingzhou; Yingshi and Dongbi to Bingzhou; Kui, Lou, and Wei to Xuzhou; Mao and Bi to Jizhou; Zui and Shen to Yizhou; Dongjing and Yugui to Yongzhou; Liu, Qixing, and Zhang to the Three Rivers; Yi and Zhen to Jingzhou." Mars is the fire planet. The *Hanshu Yinyi* states: "Ominous stars are called bushy stars and comets. Long stars are also called broom stars." The *Shiming* states: "When starlight gradually resembles a broom, it is said to be bushy like a sweeping broom; it also resembles scattered hemp, hence it is called a hemp broom." The *Zuozhuan* states: "All fires caused by humans are called 'fires'; fires from heaven are called 'disasters'." Here, anything where wind, rain, snow, or frost deviate from their seasons is called a disaster. "Heterodox teachings" refers to non-Buddhist scriptures. As for "gu sorcery", the phenomenal explanation is that transcendent spirits poison and harm humans. *Gu* (蠱) is the initial *g-* with final *-u* (gong-hu cut), and the *Shenglei* gives it as yi-zhe cut; it is a gu entity harming people. The *Shuowen* says: "*Gu* means worms in the belly." The *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* states: "With greed and hatred as their offenses, when such persons finish paying for their offenses, they encounter worms to form their shape, called gu-poison ghosts." In terms of principle, the three poisons of one's own mind are called *gu*; this *gu* can harm hundreds of thousands of births, and the Dharma body and the life of wisdom are permanently harmed by it; compared to this, the harm caused by poisonous ghosts is utterly insignificant. Ugliness in forms and sounds is seen and heard as monstrous. As for "disagreeable" (不適意), *shi* (適) means pleasing.
