初、標列章門。玄義者，《文選》云「睿哲玄覽」，注云：玄，通也。謂離文通示其義，故曰玄義。引證者，義雖妙悟而與經會，故引文證令人生信。還源者，品題是派，經目為源。所約三身明於壽量，不離法性金光明源，攝還此源令義究竟。

First, it lists the chapter headings. As for "profound meaning" (xuanyi), the Wenxuan says, "The sagely and wise possess profound insight (xuanlan)," on which the commentary says: "Xuan means penetrating." This means that leaving aside the textual phrasing, it penetratingly reveals its meaning; hence it is called "profound meaning." As for "citing proof," although the meaning is a wondrous awakening, it accords with the sūtra; thus he cites the text as proof to cause people to generate faith. As for "returning to the source," the chapter title is a branch, and the sūtra title is the source. That the three bodies on which it relies illuminate the span of life does not depart from the source of the golden-light Dharma-nature; gathering them back to this source makes the meaning ultimate.
