Second, from "As for the measure..." onward, the measure. Quan (to evaluate) is like du (to measure). The lifespan of the eternal branch is truly impossible to measure, but one forcibly measures it through a double negation. "Neither many nor few" and so forth sets forth the characteristics of this measurement. First is neither a large nor a small number; next is neither known nor unknown; third is neither expressible nor inexpressible. This reveals that the Dharma-lifespan is an inconceivable realm. Thus the Great Treatise says: "The inconceivable means not determinate." If one departs from what can be expressed and claims that the Dharma-lifespan is definitely inexpressible, that is called determinate, not inconceivable. The meaning of the two double negations above is also like this. Such an evaluation is an eternal and enduring measure. Furthermore, a large or small number evaluates the Dharma-lifespan, not the long or short function; being fully known or not fully known evaluates the Dharma-lifespan, not the partial or full reward; being expressible or inexpressible evaluates the Dharma-lifespan, its essence being neither speech nor silence.
