初、正出疑由。遠則由於九十日前告魔期滅也，此經乃是方等後分也。近則由在靈山聞佛定中唱序，既起思惟故生疑念。雖有二由，無本誓擊，此疑不生。

First, directly setting forth the causes of the doubt. Distantly, it was due to the Buddha's having informed Māra ninety days earlier that he would enter extinction; this sūtra is indeed the latter portion of the Vaipulya [period]. Proximately, it was due to being on Vulture Peak and hearing the Buddha chant the preface while in samādhi; having already engaged in reflection, doubts arose. Although there are two causes, without the stimulation of fundamental vows, this doubt would not have arisen.
