初、止疑意。疑蓋覆心者，五蓋中疑能覆禪慧。須預止者何哉？若未解理，心合致疑。既覩威尊，是決疑地，儻堅執疑念則觀慧莫開，故須止之，令諦心受法。例如等者，疑是見惑，能障真諦；斷疑見道，方進真修。信相騰疑或權或實，佛止則令自他獲益。

First, the intention of stopping doubts. As for the hindrance of doubt covering the mind: among the five hindrances, doubt can cover dhyāna and wisdom. Why must it be stopped beforehand? If one has not understood the principle, it is natural for the mind to incur doubt. Since one has beheld the Venerable One, this is the place to resolve doubts; if one firmly clings to doubtful thoughts, contemplative wisdom will not open, so it must be stopped, causing him to receive the Dharma with an attentive mind. For example, doubt is a defilement of views and can obstruct the true truth; only by severing doubt and seeing the path does one advance to genuine cultivation. Whether Ruciraketu's raising of doubt is provisional or real, the Buddha stopping it causes both self and others to obtain benefit.
