2.48

初、於小名持。知苦斷集如怨如蛇，修道證滅如親如寶，但自調故直去，無悲濟故不迴。四方四維謂八方風，諭於人天四違四順，謂利衰、毀譽、稱譏、苦樂也。須彌，諭二乘心也。

First, being called observance in the lesser [vehicle]. Knowing suffering and eradicating origination is like an enemy or a snake; cultivating the path and realizing cessation is like a relative or a jewel. Because they merely regulate themselves, they proceed straight ahead; lacking compassionate salvation, they do not turn back. The four directions and four intermediate points refer to the winds of the eight directions, which symbolize the four contrary and four accordant conditions of humans and devas—namely, gain and loss, defame and praise, praise and ridicule, suffering and pleasure. Mount Sumeru symbolizes the mind of the two vehicles.
