First, presenting the phenomenal and the principle. Question: In the phenomenal, false speech is grave when one claims to know and claims to see without having attained the noble Dharma. Here, the Dharma-door explains it as claiming to have realized and attained when one has not realized or attained; how is this different from the phenomenal? Answer: Under the fourth precept, one knows oneself not to have attained the Dharma of superior persons and deceives others by saying one has attained it; hence this false speech excludes overweening pride. In the case of false speech in principle, the inner mind truly claims to have attained and realized; this mind is inflated and looks down on others, which is overweening pride. Therefore, the Lotus Sūtra says: "Bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs who claim to have attained the ultimate do not aspire to seek supreme bodhi; you should know that these are people of overweening pride." Here, not yet understanding the perfect principle, within the three teachings of humans, devas, and [the vehicles], they each take their own to be real; this is called false speech, and it is also overweening pride.
