初、例內心泯淨。上論妙觀，且就內心研於妙境攝一切法，觀境若成，可以此觀遍歷三科及以業惑，自然皆見不思議境。故《義例》云「修觀次第，必先內心。內心若淨，將此淨心遍歷諸法，任運冥合。」

First, using the internal mind as a model for quiescence and purity. The discussion of wondrous contemplation above merely investigated the wondrous object with respect to the internal mind, encompassing all phenomena. If the object of contemplation is accomplished, one can use this contemplation to遍历 encompass the three categories as well as karma and afflictions, and one will naturally see the inconceivable object in all of them. Hence the Yili states: "In the sequence of cultivating contemplation, one must first take the internal mind. If the internal mind is pure, apply this pure mind across all phenomena, and they will naturally merge in fusion."
