First, the seven virtuous stages. First, the five methods for stilling the mind: impurity stills greed, loving-kindness stills anger, dependent origination stills delusion, counting breaths stills vitarka and vicāra, and expedients of the elements still grasping at self. If the five afflictions such as greed obstruct the mind so that it cannot be stilled, one must repent. Below "still", the character "mind" is superfluous. Next, from the four stations of mindfulness onward, they are correlated with stages and factors of enlightenment. The four inversions are: grasping the body as pure, sensations as pleasurable, the mind as permanent, and dharmas as self; the four stations of mindfulness remedy these four instances. The four right efforts: the two evils are causing those already arisen to cease, and causing those not yet arisen not to arise; the two goods are causing those already arisen to increase, and causing those not yet arisen to arise. The four bases of psychic power are desire, diligence, mind, and reflection. The five faculties are faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. The five powers share their names with the faculties, being divided into two categories by being unshakeable and eliminating obstacles. The Fahua wenju correlates the four categories of right efforts, psychic powers, faculties, and powers with the stages of heat, summit, patience, and supreme worldly states. That heat and summit differ here may be a textual error or may have a different intended meaning.
