First, ritual performance. Regarding 'eight hundred [days]' and so on: The Ākāśagarbha Sūtra states: 'Those who know the Dharma further instruct [them] to smear latrines for eight hundred days, telling them daily: "You have committed impure deeds; with single-mindedness smear and clean all the latrines, and do not let anyone know. Having smeared [them], bathe, pay homage to the thirty-five Buddhas, recite the name of Ākāśagarbha, prostrate your five limbs before the twelve divisions of scriptures, and confess your own offenses."' And so on. Regarding 'ninety days' and so on: The Pratyutpanna Sūtra states: 'There are four things by which one quickly attains this samādhi: First, one must not entertain worldly thoughts for the duration of a finger-snap for three months. Second, one must not lie down for the duration of a finger-snap for three months. Third, during walking meditation one must not rest or sit down for three months, except for taking meals and attending to bodily functions. Fourth, when preaching the sūtras to others, one must not expect clothing or food from them. These are the four.' "Pratyutpanna" is translated here as 'buddhas standing'. When the samādhi is accomplished, one sees the buddhas of the ten directions standing in empty space; hence it is named 'buddhas standing'. From 'ash-water' onward, it clarifies how each of the above practice methods purifies the three types of karma. From 'circumambulating and reciting' onward: Each method has its own regulations, and the regulation of circumambulating and reciting is most pressing in the Vaipulya [repentance]. One circumambulates one hundred and twenty rounds and recites the dhāraṇī of bearing the shoulder one hundred and twenty times, neither slowly nor hurriedly with one round and one dhāraṇī. Having finished circumambulating, one sits back down and contemplates the correct emptiness of the Middle Way. Because it guides this ceremonial procedure, it is named 'ritual performance'.
