Second, from 'from its' onward, seeing the drum's light. From the entirely illuminated principle arises the illuminating wisdom; hence the virtues of Dharma nature all become virtues of wisdom. The drum is round, empty, and resonant; how could the light not be so? The drum's three [virtues] are extraordinarily grand; the light must also be so. One must know that the essence of Dharma nature is original enlightenment, and wisdom is initial enlightenment; they are just one enlightenment. Due to non-enlightenment, original and initial are distinguished as different. Once the great fruit is accomplished, one is already free from non-enlightenment; hence initial [enlightenment] merges with original [enlightenment], which is called the union of Dharma and reward [bodies]. How could initial enlightenment be thought different from original? What is cited from the new translation as 'same essence, same intention, same enterprise': since Dharma and reward are united, they are neither two nor distinct from all Buddhas. From 'this is' onward: This seeing of the drum's light directly expresses reward wisdom. This wisdom merges with Dharma, and because Dharma possesses three, the reward also possesses three. It is also that this reward can merge with Dharma above and manifest response below; hence it is said to possess three.
