Second, from "From one..." onward, clarifying the method of teaching repentance, which has two [parts]: first, dividing the text, which has two [parts]: first, directly dividing the sūtra text; second, narrating the intent and genesis. As for "perverted views obstructing principle": giving rise to the eight inversions regarding the body of suffering retribution and obstructing the four virtues—this speaks of the retributive obstacle. The lower two may be understood. From "The Holy One..." onward: based on the above where Śākyamuni himself gave the narrative saying, "I shall now expound the method of repentance and so forth." Now, calling him the "Holy One" refers to the fundamental master, who causes one to realize that the three obstacles are identical to the three virtues. Showing them repentance is a general indication. The lower three phrases are separate indications: showing principle means that the retributive obstacle is identical to the Dharma body; showing cause and effect means that affliction is identical to prajñā—the threefold contemplation is the cause, and the three wisdoms are the fruit; showing good practice means that the binding karma is identical to liberation. As for "must have vows pointing to the return": guiding them with vows causes them to reach the ultimate.
