Second, from 'from my' onward, explaining the Dharma offering of one's own practice, in two parts: First, dividing the text and establishing the intent. From 'previously self' onward, question. From 'for example' onward, answer. It answers comprehensively by conveying the Dharma through metaphor. The goldsmith is a metaphor for the transformation lord, Śākyamuni of the golden drum. Initial practice is a metaphor for the time of first giving rise to the great armor of resolution (saṃnāha). Gray hair is a metaphor for the present manifestation after achieving the fruit; from the beginning until now, when has he ever temporarily ceased speaking of practice and speaking of repentance? Mutual smelting is a metaphor for speaking of practice in the midst of repentance. Mutual hammering is a metaphor for speaking of repentance in the midst of practice; the same is true of wisdom and severing. The vessel being formed is a metaphor for a single group of capacities attaining the fruit from the cause; hence, before attaining the fruit, they must be repeatedly smelted and hammered—why dislike repeated explanations? From 'now this' onward, distinguishing differences: although they are repeatedly smelted and hammered, each has its own approach.
