三、「遠離」下，求懺過去業。若十惡十善，止就三塗人天解釋，豈安十住、逮十力耶？得前五戒持犯之意，則今義可解，十住十力、別圓二教皆可明之。持犯之意今義易明，故須因位至於後果節節論於十惡十善。

Third, from "Far removed" downward, seeks to repent of past karma. If the ten unwholesome deeds and ten wholesome deeds are explained merely in terms of the three wretched paths and humans and devas, how could one establish the ten abodes or attain the ten powers? If one grasps the earlier meaning of upholding and violating the five precepts, then this present meaning can be understood; the ten abodes, the ten powers, and the separate and perfect teachings can all be clarified. The meaning of upholding and violating is easily understood in the present sense; therefore, one must discuss the ten unwholesome deeds and ten wholesome deeds step by step from the causal stages to the subsequent fruit.
