Sixth, explaining the difficulty of the three poisons. The Commentary's outline states: "the eight difficulties of good and evil." Good is discussed in four difficulties, which can be understood from the sūtra and Commentary. As for the difficulties of evil now, the sūtra seems to list seven; according to what are they called four? It is because the three obstacles have combined and single aspects: one combined and three single make four difficulties. Which ones? The perilous difficulty of the six destinies, the perilous difficulty of the three realms of existence, and the difficulty of frivolity and restlessness: although these are three difficulties, they belong singly to the retributive obstacle. Lust, ignorance, and the difficulty of the three poisons belong singly to afflictions. The difficulty of being close to evil companions belongs singly to the karmic obstacle. As for the perilous difficulty of birth and death, the Commentary has two explanations, and its essence combines karma and retribution. Therefore, the evil of the three obstacles corresponds in meaning to four difficulties. However, one must realize that evil is inherent evil; therefore, this evil is itself the contemplation of non-arising, and repenting it in this manner immediately eliminates all difficulties.
