First, broad analogies. These four lines are analogies brought forth for the preceding four buddhas. The Great Master explains them as either analogizing the responsive body as possessing measure and being immeasurable, or analogizing the Dharma and reward bodies as the four truths and four virtues. In the preface to the *Xuanyi*, it is revealed that the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Buddha cannot be analogized, precisely because the three bodies are freely three and one; therefore, the four analogies either pertain distinctly to one or collectively reveal the three. This passage precisely accords with the preceding correlation with the four virtues: the ocean neither increases nor decreases, hence permanence; the essence of the earth is purity; the mountain's shape is elevated, resembling the self; and empty space is unimpeded, hence bliss.
