3.58

初、約因緣釋。因親、緣疎。不殺存命為長壽因，此因親義也。施食助命為長壽緣，此緣疎義也。

First, explaining in terms of primary cause and secondary condition. The primary cause is intimate; the secondary condition is distant. Not killing to preserve life is the primary cause of long lifespan; this is the meaning of the intimacy of the cause. Giving food to support life is the secondary condition of long lifespan; this is the meaning of the distance of the condition.
