Third, below the words "the mind's dwelling," explaining that consciousness constantly goes and returns. "Now going out and now entering": facing an object it suddenly goes out, and when not facing it, it suddenly enters. "Going out and entering with barriers": Master Ying says: "It refers to going out and entering." It is also an appearance of being confined; Zhuangzi says "petty knowledge is hemmed in," meaning obstructed. "Pecking at one and letting go of one": letting go of one mesh of a net and pecking at another mesh of the net, obstructed and difficult to escape. That it can be spoken of as constantly present is because it immediately becomes aware when facing an object.
