Second, from "If directly" downward, distinguishing in contrast to the Hīnayāna. As discussed above regarding the arising and ceasing of ignorance, which teaching is not like this? If one wishes to understand it thoroughly, one must discuss the Lesser and Greater [Vehicles]. The Lesser [Vehicle] explains that the four great elements truly arise from ignorance and truly cease from ignorance. The Greater [Vehicle] explains the four great elements through three teachings: in the Shared Teaching, the substance of the four great elements is fundamentally empty of itself, so it is fundamentally free of arising and ceasing; because of ignorance, one sees them as having arising and ceasing, arising like an illusion and ceasing like an illusion. In the Distinct Teaching, the substance of the four great elements is the Buddha-nature; because of ignorance, the four great elements arise and cease; their nature has no arising or ceasing, but their characteristics have arising and ceasing. In the Perfect Teaching, the substance of the four great elements is also the Buddha-nature, and its nature fundamentally possesses the four great elements of the nine realms; therefore, whether the four great elements of the nine realms arise or cease, all are the Dharma realm. For this reason, neither nature nor characteristics arise or cease; it is in an inconceivable manner that arising and ceasing are discussed. Hence the Lotus Sūtra explains that the characteristics of the world are permanent. Since its meaning is such, all three teachings of the Greater Vehicle can explain arising from what fundamentally does not arise, and ceasing from what fundamentally does not cease; arising and ceasing are non-dual, yet dual. Now it is neither the Shared nor the Distinct [Teaching], but precisely discussed in terms of the Perfect [Teaching].
