Second, from "Also using" downward, regarding karma as the basket. Past karma still remaining, the four great elements have not yet dispersed; the caged bird is adduced once more to clarify the basket of karma. One must know that the present commentary adduces karma upholding the great [elements] with the intention of revealing the cause of origination; hence it speaks of the "mind-bird." The bird symbolizes the four divisions racing outward toward the six sense objects, constantly seeking birth and death, and not resting peacefully in the Dharma-body. If a person in thought after thought contemplates matters of breaking the precepts, they seek hell and eternally extinguish the five divisions; once the past karma as a human exhausts, they go forever to Niraya.
